Shed hunting puppy and best friend

All I can say about this little girl is...she is perfection!  Within minutes of having her home, she found her first shed in the garage.  Then another shed in my office just hours later.  I had the simple thought that, this little girl was simply born to be a shed hunter and I could not imagine a better shed hunting partner and companion in the world. Today she is 24.5 weeks old, beautiful, insanely smart, growing in confidence daily and sometimes she is a diva pain in the ass.  The truth of the matter is, I could have been more luckey to have found this little girl, she is incredible!

The Shed Hunters - Shed Hunting Puppy Training And First Swim

Shed hunting training went amazing today! For some reason Freya has been a little less than willing to pick up hard antler sheds. I am not sure if it is because her adult teeth are still not fully in or if she is just having a hard time switching from the shed dummy. Well today we did something to help her. The first couple of sheds, she would catch their wind and then be right on top of them. It is amazing to watch! But she just wouldn't pick them up. My job at this point is to remind her that its ok, be positive and even though she didn't complete the retrieve, get her excited and happy and tell...

Shed Hunting Puppy Field Training Day #3

While it was a short shed hunting traning session but tonight we did something different. Tonight while we were chasing the dummy up and down the field, I was tossing out real sheds. So the goal tonight was to place some sheds for her and see if she could pick them up blindly...SHE DID INCREDIBLE!!! I hid 7 sheds and she found all of them. Normally she is very good about retriving but tonight for what ever reason, didnt want to pick them up and bring them back to me. There are some things to work on for sure, but all in all, I am so excited to see her continued progress! <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/4WH4IlBf3P4" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media;...

Final Home Vaccination and Shed Hunting Training

Shed Hunting Season is only 2 months away and we are in full trianing mode. One of the things holding us back were all things puppy. Well in reality she was losing her baby teeth which made playing fetch a challenge. Today we stepped up our shed hunting IQ. Many of the sheds I threw landed in deep grass and while we started out with a few easier finds, it got more complex quick. Shed hunting dogs have to rely on their noses so much, very similar to bird dogs. Today was her 24 week birthday and I am so happy for how well she is doing. Shed hunting dogs are amazing and labs make amazing shed hunting dogs! Today,...

Shed Hunting Puppy Field Training Day #1

We have put a lot of work into backyard shed hunting, now it is time to put those skills to work. Freya is an American Lab and she loves shed hunting! She wasnt even half way through the garage the 1st day she was home at 7 weeks and she already found her first shed. Ever since that day, we have worked on obedience, fetching and visually finding sheds. Today was the first day she need to put her shed hunting dog hat on and actually find them when they were not so obvious, her nose is insanely good!! With shed hunting season just around the corner, training this shed puppy has been amazing and I cannot wait for out...
